Benefits of Surgery

Spinal surgery provides relief from back and neck pain, so that you can get back to living your life to the fullest.

Procedures

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is performed on patients experiencing back or neck pain, stiffness or difficulty moving due to damaged discs located in the neck. During the procedure, the surgeon removes the damaged discs in the neck and then replaces them with bone tissue from other areas of the body or artificial discs. Once replacements have been placed, a titanium plate will be screwed to the bones to provide stability.

Lumbar Spinal Fusion

Spinal fusion surgery benefits patients suffering from severe back pain due to:

  • Lumbar degenerative disc disease
  • Lumbar spondylolisthesis
  • Scoliosis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Tumors or spine infections

During this procedure, the neurosurgeon will either access the anterior (front) or posterior (back) of the torso. Once the spinal column is accessed, the surgeon will remove any joints that are located between damaged discs. Once removed, screws, rods or bone tissue are inserted to connect and stabilize the damaged discs.

Microdiscectomy

Microdiscectomies relieve pain, numbness and weakness in the legs or feet. This procedure is performed on patients suffering from herniated lumbar discs. During the procedure, the neurosurgeon will make an incision directly above the herniated disc . After an incision is made, the disc will be removed and the patient will be sutured up. Patients undergoing this procedure do not generally require overnight observation.

Posterior Cervical Fusion

Posterior cervical fusion (PCF) is a procedure used to men two or more cervical bones to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots. This procedure helps patients suffering from chronic neck pain. During the procedure, the soft tissue and ,muscles in the neck are separated and bones that lay over the spinal cord are removed. Once the needed bones are removed, the remaining bones surrounding the cord are attached together using small screws and a titanium rod. Artificial bone is then placed to help promote fusion of the vertebrae.

Recovery Time

In most cases, patients recovering from spinal surgery often require between one to three days on in-hospital monitoring followed by two weeks of minimal exertion. The surgeon may also prescribe up to six weeks of physical rehabilitation. Depending on the procedure, full recovery ranges from two to six months.
